History of Council 12617 Sioux Falls, SDSt.
Michael Council started as a round table from Marquette Council No. 815
in approximately 1996 or 1997, with monthly round table meetings held
on Saturday mornings in the Commons of the church. As a round table,
the Knights of Columbus organized such things as the Father / Son
Dinner, charity garden, and put in benches and shelves in the hallway
of the new school. Jon Schulte organized many of the meetings. Other
members who were active at the time, to name a few, were Joe French,
Keith Koletsky, Rich Peters, Don Olinger, Jeff Ihry, Jim Bennett, Joe
Boyer and Les Schmitz. Father Michael Wensing was the pastor.
The
decision to start a new council was made by the round table members in
the fall of 1999. Informational meetings were held after the Sunday
masses on November 28. Many parishioners who were either members of
other councils or were previously KC members, as well as some who were
never KC members previously, showed an interest in starting a new
council.
On Sunday, December 19, 1999 the St. Michael Council of
the Knights of Columbus held a 1st Degree initiation of new members and
organizational meeting. Over 50 men were present, 21 of which were
brand new Knights and the rest were transferring from other councils.
In addition, there are about 20 to 30 additional Knights from other
councils that have indicated an interest to also become a charter
member of the St. Michael Council. We also had a large number of men
who expressed an interest in becoming a Knight, but could not make this
initiation.
During 2000, many of the round table activities have
become annual events, such as the Father / Son Dinner and the charity
garden. Additional activities were also started, such as the Tootsie
Roll Drive and free-throw contest. Benches and coat hooks were
installed in the new addition of St Michael school and the parish
garage was repainted (both organized by Tony Anderson).
On October 15, 2000, the first 2nd and 3rd degree initiation held at St. Michaels took place.
In
the spring of 2001, Friday Stations of the Cross and fish fries were
organized during lent. Support of right-to-life activities was pursued.
The
Clete and Lola Heim family was selected as the Family of the Year, and
John Claeson was selected as the Knight of the Year for 2001.
Stations
of the Cross on each Friday and fish fries on three Fridays during lent
were continued in 2002. A kids’ bike rodeo was also organized in
September 2002. In the summer of 2002, 14 bookshelves were built for
the St Michael school (organized by Keith Koletzky). An annual charity
golf outing was started (organized by Marc Anderson).
The Monty Miller family was selected as family of the year, and Jerry Priebe was selected as Knight of the year.
In
the summer of 2003 members built a balcony on the parish rectory
(organized by Joe French) and built additional cabinets for the St.
Michael school (organized by Keith Koletzky).
